Freeport Bakery is Your Tasty Neighbor in Land Park and Curtis Park

Want to know where you can get the BEST bakery items in Land Park and Curtis Park?
I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Marlene Goetzeler owner of Freeport Bakery just this past week after showing homes in Land Park and Curtis Park. Marlene shared the story of how Freeport Bakery got its start, which I will share a bit later on.
Freeport Bakery was selected recently to make a birthday cake for CA Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger which I’m told resembled a cigar box.
Members of the Kings Basketball team also are frequent customers as well as people as far away as Stockton, Rancho Murieta, Roseville and El Macero Country Club just outside of Davis, CA. I can certainly attest to that since the first time I visited Freeport Bakery, I met two ladies who drive from Roseville to buy their cakes and wouldn’t go anywhere else.
It’s no wonder that Freeport Bakery has won the Best of Sacramento, KCRA Channel 3 A-List, the California Restaurant Association as the Best Bakery, Sacramento Parent Magazine, The Knot of Best of Weddings and Modern Baking for national recognition of excellence in training staff. Not only are their bakery items pleasing to look at but they taste good, too! My personal favorites are the chocolate and raspberry as well as the fruit basket cake but hey, I’ve only tasted those two…so there is more to add to my favorites.
Marlene and her husband, Walter (Bavaria Baker) specialize in wedding cakes and birthday cakes but did you know they got their start with danish?
After visiting Land Park and Curtis Park back in 1987 in their VW bus and dirt poor these two decided to buy a small neighborhood bakery that was across the street from the train tracks (before light rail). In order to get the business started and off it’s feet, Marlene would walk across the street and hand out danishes in the morning to all the passenger riders. This business approach obviously paid off…
A Sweet Love Story: Baking comes naturally to Walter, having been raised by his parents and living above their bakery in Bavaria, Germany. Walter was visiting San Diego and moseying around on his motorcycle looking for a map at the bookstore where Marlene was working. And as luck would have it, Marlene was looking for a German tutor. The rest is history… And now, we are lucky to have such a devoted, hard working team here in the Curtis Park and Land Park neighborhood bringing us all these tasty treats.
Marlene and Walter have owned and operated Freeport Bakery for over 21 years, providing jobs for 50 employees yearly, open 7 days a week and making sure that they produce a quality product for their customers. The Circle of Life is ever so evident here at the Freeport Bakery where brides order their wedding cakes, then their baby shower cake, birthday cakes for their children and then Marlene and Walter hire their teenage children. It’s truly a family business and one worth visiting if you haven’t yet, on Freeport Blvd. and Vallejo Way (click for Googlemap to the Freeport Bakery)
Christine Goodwin, long time employee at Freeport Bakery trains all the staff and keeps them abreast on new items so that when you come in, your questions are fully explained. You can rest assured that if you are allergic to any item, the staff is aware of all the ingredients.
