Real Estate is NOT just a House

Dirty Pool

This is something that everyone living in Sacramento County, Placer County, Yolo County and El Dorado County needs to read.

A recent home buyer, and now friend living in Natomas called me this week.

While gardening in her backyard in the afternoon, this Sacramento County homeowner noticed a swarm of mosquitoes.

Home ownership is more than just buying a home. Real Estate is more than just a house. And being a Realtor is more than just showing houses.

Foreclosures (here is a tip to avoid foreclosure), in Sacramento County, Yolo County, El Dorado County and Placer County are pretty obvious to most neighbors. Along with foreclosures comes vacant houses and property that has not been maintained.

Dont always expect to see a for sale sign in front of the house.

What many neighbors dont realize is there are houses that are vacant, with no for sale sign. Some home owners have simply left, vacated the property. Some have not even notified the mortgage Lender and it will be months before anyone knows they are gone.

There are also investors who have left their property vacant. And then, there are homeowners who dont realize the importance of maintaining their homes, backyards and lawn sprinklers.

As a neighbor, what you dont see are the pools, fountains, ponds and broken sprinklers leaking, left to breed mosquitoes. It could be next door to you or a couple of streets over a larvae only takes 10 days to develop, so Im told.

With the warm weather that we are experiencing in Sacramento, this becomes an ideal breeding ground for the mosquito. West Nile virus is a real thing and something that each of us need to help the County tackle. The County doesnt know every single vacant house.

Last year, Sacramento Association of Realtors asked Realtors to report unmaintained swimming pools, ponds and fountains to vector control. This year, we have even more foreclosures and vacant homes. The public needs to help.

Take a look over your fence, for any standing water. If you notice swarms of mosquitoes call and report your address to the appropriate county phone numbers below so that they can look around your neighborhood and take care of the problem. Check your own sprinklers and make sure there is no standing water in your yard. Keep your home maintained and help with the real estate around your house.

Someone living nearby your house may have an uncared for pool that the authorities need to be aware of and treat. Tell your friends, neighbors and co-workers we all need to do our part to help.
