REmodelchartRemodeling your home brings up questions that Im sure most have and I will make an attempt to answer some of them with the help of resources for you to determine whether remodeling your home is to your advantage or not. In a previous article, Should I Remodel How Much Do I Get Back, I showed the return on your dollar as well as the top remodeling rooms that gave the home owner return on their dollar spent. Just as a reminder, the top return on your dollar for remodeling when selling your house are: Kitchen, bathrooms, and additional Bedrooms (increasing square footage). Be sure to read the 10 tips below before hiring a contractor.

According to Realty Times, there is a surplus of materials due to Katrina which seems to indicate a lower price when it comes to remodeling costs the proof of course is in finding out what those costs are.

The first place to take a look at whether or not to remodel is at Remodel or Move which has an excellent chart showing Bathroom, Kitchen, Flooring, Window Replacement just to name a few, and the key question which is how long do you plan on living in the house. This Remodeling chart helps determine what if any remodeling costs you would gain. Of course, once again if everyone in your neighborhood has two Bathrooms, and you only have one it is somewhat of a no brainer that you should take the plunge and get that Bathroom addition, if you plan on selling close to what your neighbors have sold for.

As always, it is highly important to make sure that whomever you hire for your remodel, make sure you check out their contractors license. Here are 10 Tips to consider when hiring a Contractor.

  1. Hire only licensed contractors
  2. Check contractors license number (800) 321“2752
  3. Get three references, review past work
  4. Get at least three bids
  5. Get a written contract & dont sign anything until you understand all the terms
  6. Pay only 10% down, or $1000, which ever is less
  7. Dont let payments get ahead of the work. Keep records of your payments
  8. Dont make final payment until you are satisfied with the job
  9. Dont EVER pay cash
  10. Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project

There are some great articles and a calculator to help you figure out some costs per square footage available at Remodel or Move along with the terms used in remodeling, suggestions for affordable luxuries, ways to pay for your remodel and reasons to remodel.
