Yes, the Elk Grove Red Hat ladies were in Old Town Sac yesterday and took a ride on the Spirit of Sacramento, a 110 foot paddle wheeler and had great fun. The food was nothing to write home about but the cruise and camaraderie was definitely worth the trip.
The Spirit of Sacramento is located directly behind the Delta King in Old Town on the Sacramento River and it is a treat to see these old time paddle boats.
While cruising on the Sacramento River, we came upon a structure that I seen many times while driving past on highway 5 and often wondered what it was. That particular stretch is a fast moving area where decisions must be made quickly on whether highway 5 or 99 will be your choice. So, needless to say, I’ve put off finding out what this was for about 2 years. Now, I got to see it from a different prospective, in the water. It is the new pumping station located on the Sacramento River as a water Intake. When you see this art deco form in the River, you can’t help but ask questions to find out it’s purpose. Not too many people know why it’s there. I was fascinated as we ch
ugged past and wanted to know more. As you can see by the photo there are numbers on the side of the concrete base that is in the Sacramento River. These numbers represent the feet that the Sacramento River as climbed to.If you were here during the Winter of 2005, I’m sure you didn’t miss the flooding that went on throughout our area. These numbers are indicative of that very problem. While cruising down the Sacramento River I couldn’t help but remember the problems that are levees have and being reminded of how important this November 7th election is to each Sacramentian. If Proposition 1 E passes, this will at least start us in the right direction toward shoring up the levees. Granted it’s just 1/3 of the money needed but to continue to put this fix off is tempting fate, in my estimation. Our levees do indeed need much improvement. As the Red Hat Ladies and I cruised down the Sacramento River I couldn’t help but recall what it was like a mere eleven months ago in December 2005. Just to jog your memory I thought it appropriate timing before voting on this important issue to refresh each persons memory of the Sacramento River in 2005. Do you remember?
The Sacramento River running under the Sacramento Bridge was quite high and many areas were flooded last year. Downtown had its issues…all the way to Citrus Heights not to mention West Sacramento and the River Walk area.Just an FYI for each homeowner… there are some areas in and around Sacramento that require Flood insurance but even though your area may not require it, you might want to investigate with your insurance company whether you would be covered for the back-up of sewer and drains. Often times, this is what damages your home and many homeowners find all but to late that they are not covered. Always best to be safe rather than sorry.
Here is the RiverWalk Area in 2005 where you can see trees trunks under water. Discovery Park was the same way, if I recall.I was pleased to see during our Red Hat cruise on the Spirit of Sacramento that some work has been accomplished by bringing in large boulders to shore up some of the levees. We have so much at stake and we also have the disaster of Katrina in New Orleans and Mississippi to jog our memories. We can’t say we haven’t been told and we are being given an opportunity to at least begin the process of securing our levees. Please take the time in the next few days to read and study the articles that will be on the Sacramento County ballot and vote your conscience.I hope to see you next time while cruising down the lovely Sacramento River…

Gena,
Congratulations on your new blog! It really looks beautiful…
Now we have two places to read you, here and ActiveRain.
Thank you Maureen. It’s quite an adventure!
MyMoneyForest, Yes, the Red Hat Ladies of Elk Grove thank you for consideration in the Carnival of Business.
A couple of my colleagues and I were being stalked by the red hats for a while, or so it seemed. Every time we went out to lunch over a two-month span the red hats were there … Black Angus, Olive Garden, the Westbrook Village Vistas Restaurant and even Hooters. THERE WAS NO ESCAPE!
Johathan, Yes we are everywhere. There a lot of different chapters…we all have the same things in common.
